‘They are equipped with devices and tools necessary to attend to disasters swiftly'
“Several districts in the State are procuring modern rescue vans,” Regional Fire Officer Gurulingaiah said here. Mr. Gurulingaiah said such vans were equipped with devices and tools necessary to swiftly attend to disasters.
“Apart from a 35-ft manually operated ladder fitted to the van, it has equipment such as generators to facilitate effective handling of emergencies and thermal imaging cameras to see objects in the dark, a pair of aluminium suits and protective gear for fire personnel,” he said.
The Department of Fire and Emergency Services is providing district fire department offices with rescue vans.
The Regional Office of Fire and Emergency Services in Mysore received three rescue vans for the districts of Mysore, Mandya and Chamarajnagar. Mysore got the van a couple of years ago while Chamarajnagar and Mandya districts got the vans recently.
Mr. Gurulingaiah told The Hindu that Hassan will get the rescue van soon. “Emergencies can be handled effectively with such a facility,” he said.
The vehicle has been designed as per the requirements of the Fire and Emergency Services Department and most of the equipment in it has been imported.
The van costs about Rs. 1 crore.
“It even has a lifeboat,” he said. “There are search lights for carrying out rescue operations in case of disruption in power supply,” he said.
