‘It will protect interests of sportspersons of the districts neglected by KOA’
No dearth of sports talent in the region, says Horatti
is 14 districts
GULBARGA: In a virtual revolt against the “neglect” of sportspersons by the Karnataka Olympic Association, sports bodies in north Karnataka on Wednesday came out with a new sports association under the banner “North Karnataka Olympic Association”. Primary and Higher Education Minister Basavaraj Horatti is its president.
Mr. Horatti, who unfurled the flag of the newly formed association and flagged off a road race to mark its inauguration in the city, said that the association was being formed to protect the interests of sportspersons and sports activities in north Karnataka which had remained neglected all these years.
The Minister, who did not hide his displeasure over the functioning of the Karnataka Olympic Association, said the reason for forming an alternative sports body for north Karnataka was the continued neglect and partisan attitude of the Karnataka Olympic Association, which seldom selected sportspersons from the north Karnataka districts to represent the State in national games and sports meets.
He said that there was no dearth of sports talent in north Karnataka districts, and systematic grooming of the talent would open new avenues in the field of sports and employment to the youth of the region. Sports had become an important tool for unemployed youth to get employment in public sector and private companies, he said.
Mr. Horatti said that the formation of a sports body for the region should not be construed as support to the demand for a separate statehood for north Karnataka. He said he was opposed to the demand for separate statehood for north Karnataka on the plea that it was denied its due in development activities.
However, the people of the region should not loose their right to protest against the neglect and denial of their due by the State bodies, he said.
The jurisdiction of the association is 14 districts in north Karnataka. The association has been formed to encourage and promote all sports and games for sportspersons of the region and organise sports competitions. The association will also conduct coaching camps, training camps for sports and games in different categories.
