UDUPI: Sri Sugunendra Tirtha Swamiji of Puttige Math has been re-elected as president of the World Conferences on Religions and Peace at its three-day eighth convention held at Kyoto in Japan.
A press release issued by the Puttige Math here on Wednesday stated that the Prime Minister of Japan inaugurated the convention. Sri Sugunendra Tirtha was re-elected in absentia at the convention. He would hold the position of the president of World Conferences on Religions and Peace for the next five years. The swamiji could not attend the convention because of "Chaturmasya vrata." The swamiji has sent his written message to the convention.
The swamiji was elected as the President of the World Conferences on Religions and Peace for the first time in 1999 at the seventh convention held in Amman in Jordan. During his first term, he was instrumental in implementing several progressive international schemes in various countries, the release added.
