Karwar: Shivanand Naik, Minister for Small Scale Industries, has urged journalists to uphold ethics and values.

Speaking after inaugurating the second district-level convention of journalists at Bhatkal on Saturday, he appealed to the journalists from Uttara Kannada to highlight the problems of the district.

Journalists should point out the mistakes of the Government and the administration. However, they should not indulge in unnecessary criticism, he said. H.K. Patil, leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council, who released a souvenir on the occasion, said the print media should focus on protection of human rights. Gangadhar Shastri, Najgar; and Sumangala Honnekoppa, journalists, were honoured with the Shamrao Endowment Award and Ajjibal Endowment Award for their contribution to journalism.

Mohan Shetty, Kumta MLA, and V. Venkatesh, president of the State Working Journalists' Association, spoke. Subraya Bhat, president of the Zilla Patrika Mandala, presided over the function. Meanwhile, a few journalists demonstrated black flags alleging that the mandala had ignored Karavali Munjavu, a local daily, which had received the Andholana Award for rural reporting.
