Message of the scouting movement to be taken to rural areas in the district

MADIKERI: An all religion prayer, candle lamp show by the scouts and guides, marked the inauguration of the yearlong centenary celebrations of the scouting movement in the world held here on Thursday.

Deputy secretary of the Kodagu Zilla Panchayat Zulfiqarulla inaugurated the display by lighting and holding up a candle.

The beginning

The Government junior college premises then called the Central High School, venue of the function, brought back memories of the past. It was here during 1918 the Scouts and Guides movement was launched in the district under the stewardship of Rao Bahadur, K.T. Uthappa.

Speaking on the occasion, the chief commissioner of Scouts and Guides, Kodagu, K.T. Baby Mathew, said efforts would be made to spread the message of the movement in the rural areas of the district during the centenary celebrations.

Teachers involved in the movement needed to put in sincere efforts to carry forward the movement.

Earlier, the Deputy Director of Public Instruction, Mohammad Basheer, inaugurated a jatha of the scouts and guides at the Gaddige. Deputy Commissioner Subodh Yadav gave away prizes to the winners of the district-level awards in the cubs, bulbuls, scouts and guides categories.

`Achieve excellence'

He urged the scouts and guides to strive to achieve excellence. Every child was capable enough to achieve the best since the youth formed the backbone of the nation, Mr. Yadav said.

Mr. Zulfiqarulla said the kind of discipline that the movement infused in the students would stand them in good stead for the future. Principal of the Government Junior College Rekha Kalaiah also spoke.
