CHICKABALLAPUR: Several students of a private school and some people complained of uneasiness and nausea after a foul and pungent smell emanated from an “intermediate pharmaceutical” unit here.

Senior officials confirmed that the smell emanated from a unit in the industrial area on the outskirts of the town.

There were reports that the smell started when some employees of the firm were transferring hydrogen sulphide from one container to another, first on Wednesday afternoon and again on Thursday morning.

However, District Environment Officer Rekha told The Hindu that as investigation was on she could not confirm anything.

Students and staff of BGS World School, situated near the unit, on Wednesday complained of uneasiness, irritation in eyes and throat, and nausea.

Suspecting a gas leak, school authorities suspended classes and sent the children home. A similar situation prevailed when classes commenced on Thursday.

Employees of other industries in the area and labourers working in the surrounding fields also complained of uneasiness and irritation in eyes and throat.
