BIDAR: Members of the Bidar district unit of the Karnataka Rajya Dalit Sangharsha Samithi has urged the Union Government to sanction scholarships to all Dalit students after withdrawing an earlier circular which stated that only meritorious students belonging to the community are eligible to claim scholarships in higher education.

District convenor of the samitihi Umeshkumar Swaralikar led the protest. About 50 members participated in a symbolic protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office.

A memorandum addressed to Governor Rameshwar Thakur submitted through the Deputy Commissioner on Wednesday said that scholarships should be made available to all Dalit students pursuing higher education.

The members said that the Union and State governments should set aside 25 per cent and 30 per cent of the funds for SC/ST communities respectively from the funds announced in budgets for 2008-09.

Steps should be taken to identify landless Dalit families in the State, they said.
