Satara team wins ‘Gokak Challenge 2012’

“Gokak Challenge 2012”, off-road jeep racing event, took off on a thrilling note here on Saturday.

The event was organised at a stone quarry site on Ghataprabha-Dhupdal Road, about 10 km from Gokak, by adventure sports organisation “Explore the Outdoors”, Gokak, headed by Ayub Khan. The event attracted a large number of adventure sports lovers from Gokak town and adjoining villages.

Sixty-seven teams from Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra, and Andhra Pradesh participated in the event, which was the first of its kind in this small town.

Teams headed by Sanket Shanbag from Satara in Maharashtra, and Sandeep Mahenkar from Goa won the first and second prizes, respectively. The first prize of 9500 LBS Winch was sponsored by Vasavadatta Cement dealer (Gokak), and the second prize of 6500 LBS Winch by Riddhi Siddhi Gluco Boils Pvt. Ltd, Gokak. Vega Helmets, Belgaum, gave away helmets to the winning teams. The races were held in three stages of natural hurdles and steep drops viz. Steep 12 feet inclined at 80 degrees, 75-80 degrees drop at 67 feet and 42-inch deep water crossing with several natural hurdles.
