Traffic was disrupted in Hubli on Wednesday owing to Dalit organisations’ protest against police action in Belgaum on Tuesday.

The Dharwad District Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Pourakarmikara Naukarara Sangha staged a protest opposing the alleged police atrocity against Dalits while they were protesting outside the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha in Belgaum on Tuesday.

According to a press release, the sangha said the police action was violation of human rights.

It demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar and Home Minister R. Ashok.

The sangha also sought legal action against Superintendent of Police Sandeep Patil.

Mr. Patil should be suspended and booked under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Atrocities Act, the release said.

The protesters, who gathered at the Rani Chennamma Circle, burnt an effigy of the State government.

Rasta roko

They also staged a rasta roko and blocked the Pune–Belgaum National Highway. Traffic was paralysed for more than one hour in the city. The sangha claimed there was no need for the police to cane protesters who were singing revolutionary songs as part of their agitation.

The Dalit organisations in the State would protest if the State government failed to implement the recommendations of the Sadashiva panel report, the release added.
