ZP delegation to meet Chief Minister

BIDAR: D.K. Siddaram, chairman of the Standing Committee on Agriculture and Industry of Bidar Zilla Panchayat, has said that a delegation headed by him will meet Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa on July 22, seeking release of Rs. 500 crore as crop loss compensation for farmers in the district.

At a press conference here on Tuesday, he said that sowing operations had been affected owing to poor rainfall. It had started only in 67 per cent of the 344 lakh hectares of land under cultivation. “The kharif crop has failed this year, and in some areas where sowing was taken up, seedlings have started to wither due to lack of water,” Mr. Siddaram said.

He said that he Government would be urged to pay Rs. 5,000 an acre as crop loss compensation to the farmers. He urged the Chief Minister to take steps to prevent farmers from committing suicide. The delegation that will meet the Chief Minister will comprise Basavraj Tambake, honorary president of Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha; KRRS district unit president Vishwanath Patil Koutha; and members of the Standing Committee on Agriculture and Industries, he said.

Mr. Siddaram appealed to the farmers to enrol their names to avail themselves of crop insurance before July 31.
