Rs. 16-lakh worth liquor seized

Belgaum: The Excise officials seized liquor worth Rs. 16 lakh which was being smuggled into the State, on Tuesday.

According to official sources, excise inspector Santosh Tippanavar, in-charge of the recently opened checkpost at Kugnoli, near Karnataka-Maharashtra border, stopped a truck bearing Rajasthan registration number. The truck driver claimed that he was transporting textile waste.

However, the Excise officials found cases of liquor under the textile waste.

Sources said that as many as 1,020 cases whisky bottles, worth Rs. 16 lakh, were seized.

The truck was also seized and the driver arrested.

The consignment was being transported from Daman to Bangalore and there were no documents to show that tax was paid, the sources said. A case has been registered.

Later, Deputy Commissioner and District Election Officer M.E. Shivalingmurthy and Joint Commissioner of Excise S. Anantkumar visited the spot.
