HASSAN: Even while people here are yet to reconcile themselves to the misappropriation of Rs. 3 lakh from the local State Bank of India branch, the embezzlement of a further Rs. 10 lakh has come to light.

Reserve Bank of India auditors, who are here for a routine inspection, noticed the misappropriation of Rs. 10 lakh on Wednesday and brought it to the notice of the Branch Manager. He immediately filed a complaint with the police.

A case of misappropriation has been registered against the Deputy Manager, Accounts, and the Deputy Manager, Cash, who are joint custodians of the currency chest, and a First Information Report filed, the police said.

Senior police officials interrogated both the officials on Wednesday night and Thursday morning, but failed to elicit any useful information.

Senior bank officials have rushed to Hassan. Sources in the bank confirmed that both the officials had been suspended and an inquiry ordered.

In December, Rs. 3 lakh was found missing from the currency chest, and the police registered a case. However, bank officials replaced the money and the matter was reportedly hushed up.

According to sources, the second such incident has lowered the morale of the staff, as the credibility of the bank is at stake.

When contacted, the police said that there had been no progress in the investigation related to previous incident.
