BANGALORE: In its platinum year, the Rotary Club of Bangalore here gave away the “Woman of Substance Award” to recognise those who have achieved and changed lives through their achievements.

Padma Shri award-winning author Shashi Deshpande, who was the chief guest of the event on Monday, presented awards to writer Ammu Joseph, Kannada Prabha journalist D. Yeshoda, All India Radio’s B.V. Padma and Nirmala Yaligar of Doordarshan.

These awards are being given away for the third year by the Women Empowerment Committee of Rotary Club of Bangalore.

Addressing the gathering, Ms. Deshpande said, “I feel it is time for women to come out of the confines of feminism.”
