Traffic between Mysore and Bangalore was disrupted for more than an hour as the State highway connecting the cities was blocked at Shivapura, near Maddur in Mandya district, on Monday.

Residents of Alur, Vaidyanathapura and adjoining villages staged a rasta roko in front of the Satyagraha Soudha at Shivapura, demanding the construction of a new bridge between Alur and Vaidyanathapura.

They said they were facing problems owing to the poor condition of the existing bridge, and asked the Government to repair it by December for use until work on the new one was taken up.

Stranded

Several vehicles were stranded on the highway near Maddur because of the protest.

The protesters raised slogans and marched to the tahsildar's office. They again blocked the highway following a delayed response from the office to their protest.

Tahsildar Nagaraj and the executive engineer of the Public Works Department persuaded the residents to end their protest. They said steps had been taken for construction of a new bridge and work orders would be issued soon after getting approval from the Government. A report on repairing the existing bridge would be sent to the Government, the authorities added.
