Residents of Venkateshwar Nagar in Challakere taluk on Thursday took out a procession and staged a dharna outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office here seeking action against the alleged forcible eviction of poor and backward class people from their houses by some businessmen.

About 50 families belonging to backward communities have been living in small huts in Venkateshwar Nagar for four decades. They are all daily wage employees. If evicted, they would all become homeless, the residents said and alleged that some businessmen were forcibly evicting them with the support of political leaders and officials.

The government should take immediate steps to provide property rights to the families residing in Venkateshwar Nagar, they said and submitted a memorandum to Deputy Commissioner V.P. Ikkeri.
