DEMANDING FACILITIES:Residents of Sadiq Nagar staging a protest in Chitradurga on Saturday.

Residents of Sadiq Nagar locality on Saturday staged a dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office here demanding civic amenities.

The protesters, mostly evacuees from the Maruti Nagar area who have been provided temporary accommodation at Sadiq Nagar for the past six months, said that their houses had no electricity or water supply. Earlier, the City Municipal Council had shifted some families who were living close to the railway line Maruti Nagar, to Sadiq Nagar.

Stating that a majority of the evacuees were daily wage labourers, they said they were unable to visit the city every day in the absence of transport facility from Sadiq Nagar, which was about 3 km away from the city.

“Our income is limited and we cannot afford to travel by private vehicles every day. Moreover, we cannot walk the entire distance,” said Gangamma, a resident.

Vacant houses

She also said that the owners of some vacant houses in the area were not prepared to offer them for rent. The protesters urged the district administration to get new houses constructed for them with all basic facilities.
