Residents of Hunchanatti village of Belgaum taluk, including students, staged a demonstration outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office protesting against the cancellation of ration cards by the Department of Food and Civil Supplies.
They said the officials had cancelled ration cards of nearly 150 families below poverty line belonging to SCs, STs, Muslims and other backward classes. Cancellation of ration cards had deprived them of benefits under the public distribution system and the Anna Bhagya scheme, under which rice up to 30 kg was available for Re. 1 a kg.
The residents said these families were daily wage workers and were living in poverty..
As their ration cards had been cancelled, they were forced to buy food grains from the market at unaffordable prices. The Deputy Commissioner should direct officials to look into their problems and issue BPL cards afresh within fifteen days, failing which they would be forced to launch an intensified agitation, the residents said.
