Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar has said that the process of issuing title deeds to slum-dwellers had begun in the State.

He was addressing a gathering here after handing over title deeds to 568 residents of Girani Chawl.

Mr. Shettar said that funds would be provided soon for the development of interior roads in Girani Chawl. He said the Karnataka Housing Board would come up with projects to provide shelter to the homeless.

Minister for Housing V. Somanna said there were 2,722 slums in the State and out of which 2,251 had been officially declared as slums.

He said that there were 105 declared slums in Hubli-Dharwad that had a population of 1.4 lakh.

Mr. Somanna said that a committee had been set up to submit a report on private slums in the State. Based on its report, steps would be taken to issue title deeds to them.

Virabhadrappa Halaharavi, MLA, and Pralhad Joshi, MP, were present.
