A large number of schoolchildren took part in a procession held as part of the Vivekananda Rathayatra, conducted by Ramakrishna Mission, to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda here on Tuesday.
The students carried placards with excerpts from Swami Vivekananda’s speeches. A chariot carrying two statues of Swami Vivekananda was the special attraction of the procession.
The procession was followed by a programme at A.V.K College Ground where seers of the Ramakrishna Mission addressed the students. Swami Yuktesananda of Ramakrishna Ashram at Ponnampete called upon students to develop self-confidence and understand the significance of the land called India. He suggested that they read Swami Vivekananda’s speeches to understand India better.
Leaders of Narendra Modi Fans Association and Hindutva groups played a prominent role in holding the rathayatra, according to the organisers.
V. Anbukkumar, Deputy Commissioner, had issued a circular to all schools and colleges to take part in the procession.
