The two-day ‘Ijteba', a religious congregation of Muslims, commenced with special prayers at a makeshift venue on Sambra Road here on Monday.

The event was organised for Belgaum, Khanapur, Bailhongal, Ramdurg and Soundatti taluks. The police had made elaborate arrangements to prevent untoward incidents. At the event, Muslims congregate try to understand Islamic values and spiritualism.

Priests addressed the congregation and interacted with the participants. The event will conclude on Tuesday with special prayers.

Dayananda Swami, chairman, World Animal Welfare Board & Cattle Protection Force, which has been campaigning against animal sacrifice, participated in the event and had his lunch with the devotees.

He expressed his pleasure and complimented the organisers of Ijteba for sticking to vegetarian food on the occasion.
