Four women and two children died in

the incident

Madikeri: Kodagu Deputy Commissioner M.K. Baladevakrishna on Saturday disbursed relief of Rs. 1 lakh each to the relatives of four of the six persons who died when lightning struck them at M. Badaga near Murnad in the district on March 17.

Four women and two children had died in the incident. Relatives of two of the victims did not turn up on Saturday.

The six-month-old baby who survived the lightning strike was named by Mr. Baladevakrishna as Prakruti.

Tribal community leaders J.P. Raju and R.K. Chandra were present on the occasion. Two children of Pushpa — Ganesha and Prakruti —, one of the victims, were given compensation of Rs. 1.5 lakh each.

Pushpa, her daughter Aruna and son Subramani had died in the incident.

Pushpa’s husband had abandoned her. A sum of Rs. 1.25 lakh each would be deposited in separate accounts of the children in the Corporation Bank at Kushalnagar. The remaining amount would be utilised for post-cremation expenses.

Ten-year-old Ganesha was admitted to the Morarji school in Basavanahalli, and he would draw the interest from the deposited amount every month. The responsibility of taking care of the aged mother of Pushpa and Prakruti was entrusted to Jyoti, Pushpa’s sister.

Raju, husband of Jaya (40), another victim, and his two sons would share the Rs. 1 lakh compensation among themselves.

Mr. Baladevakrishna asked the concerned to admit Raju in the District Hospital here on Monday for treatment to gangrene.
