: G. Madhavan, Coordinator-Science Education Panel of the Indian Academy of Sciences, said on Monday that the continued conduct of refresher courses in the country would start showing perceptible results in improving the standards of teaching.
He was speaking at the inaugural function of a 13-day refresher course for college and university teachers on ‘Bioinformatics in Modern Biology’ organized by the School of Life Sciences (SOLS), Manipal University .
According to a press release issued by the SOLS, Mr. Madhavan listed the various activities supported by the three science academies of the country towards student research scholarships, teacher lectureships and refresher courses. There was an enormous increase in the number of summer research fellowships at the academies in recent years, he said.
. Inaugurating the refresher course, K. Ramnarayan, vice chancellor of Manipal Univesity, spoke on the essentials for excellence in teaching and lecturing, by listing the dangers to be avoided, and the ingredients required in an effective lecture. He urged the participants to interact with the experts taking part in the refresher course.
K. Satyamoorthy, director, SOLS, welcomed the gathering. Gopalkrishna Bhat delivered the vote of thanks.
