MANGALORE: The Government should provide relief to consumers by reducing sales tax on petrol and diesel, Dakshina Kannada District Youth Congress president Bondala Jagannath Shetty said here on Wednesday.

Addressing presspersons, he said the price rise was an inevitable result of international market pressures. But reducing sales tax would take away some burden from consumers. Goa, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra had reduced sales tax on petroleum products, especially diesel, he said.

But here, although the tax component on the price of petroleum products was as high as Rs. 22.65 for petrol and Rs. 13.37 for diesel, the Government had not done anything about it. "The Government should reduce sales tax,'' he said.

Referring to an announcement made by Deputy Chief Minister that Rs. 1 crore would be released for a feasibility study for a sky bus system in the city, Mr. Shetty said the Government should focus on funding the construction of a vented dam at Thumbe.
