Leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party have urged President Pratibha Patil to recall Governor H.R. Bhardwaj for allegedly attempting to destabilise the Government in the State.

Members of the BJP took out a rally here on Friday and submitted a memorandum to Ms. Patil through the office of the Deputy Commissioner.

The protesters, led by Mayor Poorna Patil, councillor Vijayanand Shetty and others, formed a human chain near the court circle and burnt the Governor in effigy. Later, they held a demonstration in front of the Deputy Commissioner's officer here.

The protesters alleged that the Governor was behaving like a Congress agent and had misused his office. The Governor, for the last two-and-a-half years, had been trying to destabilise the Government and had submitted false report to the Centre, they alleged.

The protesters claimed that the Congress party had lost its foothold in the State.
