‘Yeddyurappa making false claims about achievements'

Justifying his statement that the agriculture budget presented by the former Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa had not improved the lives of farmers, Janata Dal (Secular) State unit president and former Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy has said that he will accept Mr. Yeddyurappa's challenge for a public debate on the issue.

At a press conference here on Sunday, Mr. Kumaraswamy spoke at length on how Mr. Yeddyurappa was making “false claims” about the achievements of the agriculture budget.

“Only because some of his followers have increased their landholdings he (Mr. Yeddyurappa) thinks that he has improved the lives of farmers. I am ready to participate in the public debate on the ‘achievements' of the agriculture budget, wherever it is held. But the reality is that Mr. Yeddyurappa will never organise the debate as has been proven on earlier occasions,” he said.

Mr. Kumaraswamy said the agriculture budget was an eyewash. Even when crops were fetching prices far below the minimum support price (MSP) in APMC yards, the Government never bothered to come to the rescue of farmers, he charged.

He said there was utter confusion in the BJP Government in the State. “There is no coordination between Ministers, MLAs and the Chief Minister. Contradictory statements are being made every day and nobody knows what is happening. Instead of running the Government amid such confusion, it is better they seek a fresh mandate,” he added.

Byelection

Mr. Kumaraswamy said the JD(S) would finalise its candidate for the byelection to the Udupi-Chikmagalur Lok Sabha constituency in two to three days.

He said the party was preparing for the next Assembly elections with the target to win at least 120 to 130 seats. “North Karnataka is a challenge for the JD(S) and we are trying to woo the voters. The party has the support of farmers and the working class in the region, and moreover I am not a leader of any one particular community,” he said.

‘Criticised'

Mr. Kumaraswamy lambasted Congress leader Siddaramaiah for commenting about internal affairs of the JD(S). To Mr. Siddaramaiah's suggestion that party supremo H.D. Deve Gowda's family project MLC Basavaraj Horatti as the chief ministerial candidate, Mr. Kumaraswamy said it would be better if the Congress leader gave his suggestions to his party leaders on the same issue.

“Mr. Siddaramaiah should know that he was made the Deputy Chief Minister by the JD(S)…. He is good in blackmailing tactics and he is doing the same in the Congress also,” he added.
