: After repeated postponements, the Rani Channamma University’s (RCU) maiden convocation will be held on February16. However, it would be held not on the varsity’s campus at Bhutharamanahatti but at the Visvesvaraya Technological University auditorium at Machche.

The former Chief Justice of India M.N. Venkatachaliah will deliver the convocation address. Governor H.R. Bhardwaj, who is also Chancellor of RCU, will preside and Minister for Higher Education C.T. Ravi will be present. Although an official announcement on persons selected for the honorary doctorate degree is yet to be made, sources at the RCU told The Hindu that as many as 12 persons have been chosen for it.

But, sources said there were some genuinely welcome selections for the honour. Prominent persons to be conferred the degree are noted scientist K. Kasturirangan, Mr. Venkatachaliah, economist Isher Judge Ahluwalia, wife of noted economist and Deputy Chairman of Planning Commission Montek Singh Ahluwalia, noted lexicographer G. Venkatasubbaiah, the former Vice-Chancellors S. Bisalaiah and M.I. Savadatti, founder of Bijapur Liberal District Educational Association (BLDEA) B.M. Patil (posthumously), Siddaram Swami of Nagnur Rudrakshi Math, and KLE Society chairman and Rajya Sabha member Prabhakar Kore, senior Congress leader Veeranna Mattikatti, MLC, Kannada leader from Belgaum Siddangouda Patil, and principal correspondent of the New Indian Express in Belgaum Sarjoo Katkar.

Sources said there were objections by some Syndicate members to a few names, but they finally authorised Vice-Chancellor B.R. Ananthan to take the final decision. A few days before Prof. Ananthan told The Hindu that he had accommodated national-level eminent personalities and local persons considering their services and contribution in their fields.
