It was an endless night of mental and physical abuse for the construction labourer, who was raped by two men while returning home from work on Friday night, near Chikkaboovanahalli, Hassan district. It turns out that when she came running home seeking help, she was beaten up by her husband because he suspected her actions.
The woman, a mother of three, was abandoned near her house after the rape. Her husband, who had by then heard that she was forcibly picked up by the two men, began to abuse and beat her. He demanded to know why the culprits had chosen to pick her up and not her sister-in-law, who was her companion that night.
According to sources, her husband, who did not have a regular job and spent most of his earnings on alcohol, simply refused to listen to her explanation of the incident. Unable to bear the torture, she ran out of the house and took shelter in a neighbour’s house. Later, she informed her parents and brother about the incident and her brother accompanied her to Dudda police station, where a complaint was registered on Saturday. She has been staying in her mother’s house after medical tests were conducted.
In her complaint to the police, she said she had missed her bus from work on Friday. She sought help from other male construction workers to get a drop home.
One of her co-workers assured her that he would drop her home on his two-wheeler. She then realised that her sister-in-law was walking home to her village and decided to join her instead.
It was while the duo was walking home that Ningaiah, a construction worker known to her, stopped the vehicle in which he was travelling and offered to drop her to the village. When she refused, he pulled her into the vehicle forcibly and sped away. She was later raped by both Ningaiah and Madhu, the driver of the vehicle.
Dudda police have arrested Ningaiah and Madhu and seized the vehicle used by them.
