Various associations of slum-dwellers, under the banner Slum Janandolana – Karnataka, have planned an awareness rally across the State.

Social activist Medha Patkar will launch the rally in Gulbarga on Sunday. It will culminate in Bangalore on December 21.

Announcing this at a press conference here on Thursday, district convener of the janandolana Akram Mashalkar said the objective was to make slum-dwellers aware of the importance of their vote. For decades now, slum-dwellers had been exploited by political parties as vote bank. Better living conditions and social justice eludes slum-dwellers, he said. They would be told not to elect non-performing and undeserving leaders, he said.

Slum-dwellers formed a major chunk of the electorate at least in some parts of the State. Except rendering lip service and making hollow promises, elected representatives do nothing to improve the living standards of their primary electorate, he charged.

Taking on the BJP government, Mr. Mashalkar said the party’s promise of providing ‘pucca’ houses and title deeds to slum-dwellers had remained only on paper. He refuted the r claim of local MLA Appu Pattanshetty that 8,000 houses had been provided to slum-dwellers in Bijapur city. He said he had not ensured that slum-dwellers got title deeds for their houses. The government would be urged to set up a separate ministry for the welfare of slum-dwellers, he added.
