Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister H.K. Patil has directed government officials to give full information about the projects that could be taken up under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) scheme to the people in the rural areas of the district.

Presiding over a meeting of the zilla panchayat officials here, Mr. Patil said there was scope not just for community-based projects, but also for individual works under the MNREGA scheme. Projects such as levelling fields and construction of bunds too could be taken up. If proper information was given, more persons could be enrolled under the scheme, he said.

Officials should visit rural areas and identify public or community works, which could be taken up under the Scheme. Public or community works such as construction of children’s playground, crematoriums and others could be taken up. Officials should also take the help of local voluntary organisations for successful implementation of MNREGA, he said.

Urban Development Minister Vinay Kumar Sorake said MNREGA scheme should be propagated through the Gram Sabhas in the rural areas.
