A classmate used

to torture him demanding

money: police

CHICKBALLAPUR: A final year degree student of a private college in Chickballapur committed suicide on Thursday as he was allegedly ragged and tortured by his classmate.

The police said Manjunath (21), a final year BA student, jumped into an open well near his house in Payyur village on the outskirts of Chickballapur. He was a student of Govinda Teertha First Grade College at Nandi village.

The police said that Manjunath had, in a 15-page note, mentioned that his classmate Sreenivasa used to mentally and physically torture him demanding money.

On one occasion, Manjunath had reportedly bought a mobile phone for Sreenivasa. Whenever Manjunath refused to pay him money, Sreenivasa allegedly humiliated him in the public, the police quoted the note as saying. The Chickballapur Rural police have arrested Sreenivasa of Peresandra village. They have registered a case of abetting suicide under Section 306 of the Indian Penal Code against him.

Quoting the suicide note, the police said Manjunath had brought the matter to the notice of the college principal but, according to them, he had not taken it seriously.

Manjunath and Sreenivasa, both of whom belonged to the same community, were staying in the Valmiki community hostel in Chickballapur town, the police said.

Manjunath, who had gone home from the hostel on Wednesday, left his house around 3 a.m. on Thursday when there was a power shutdown. When he did not return, his parents launched a search for him. Around 8 a.m. they found the body in the well, the police said.
