Raichur: The Scheduled Castes Reservation Hitha Rakshana Vedike has decided to organise a protest rally in New Delhi on March 11 opposing the United Progressive Alliance Government's proposal to provide reservation to Dalit Christians and Dalit Muslims.

Addressing presspersons here on Wednesday, P. Srinivas, convener of the vedike, said the proposal to provide Dalit status to certain people who had converted to Christianity and Islam was a move to suppress the Dalits. It was nothing but a political gimmick to woo those who had converted to other faiths. He said the vedikehad decided to stage nationwide rallies and dharnas to pressure the Government into withdrawing its proposal. Mr. Srinivas said a majority of people belonging to the Dalit community were poor and still needed special assistance to improve their living standards. Their reservation quota had now been reduced to 12 per cent. With the move proposing to give 15 per cent reservation to Dalit Christians and Dalit Muslims, the interests of the real Dalits would be affected. This would also promote conversions, he feared.
