Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs S. Suresh Kumar has promised the agitating people near Gedlehalli in Kadur taluk that steps would be taken to stop stone quarrying in the village.

A large number of people staged a demonstration in front of the taluk office in Kadur on Friday and submitted a memorandum to Mr. Suresh Kumar, who is also the Minister in-charge of Chikmagalur district, during his visit to the town. The Minister was accompanied by Viswanath, MLA, and panchayat members. The Minister said that he would hold a meeting of officials of the Mines and Geology Department, the Deputy Commissioner of Chikmagalur district and the local MLA in Bangalore and ensure that quarrying was stopped in the village. People of the village said that Satyanarayana Reddy of Bellary district bought some land in the village two years ago and started stone quarrying.

Many houses in the village developed cracks owing to the blasts at the quarry.

Quarrying had also damaged arecanut and coconut plantations.

After the Minister left the village, the agitators damaged an excavator and other equipment used for quarrying.
