The Lokayukta police, on Wednesday, caught an Executive Engineer with the Public Works Department red-handed while he was accepting a bribe from a civil works contractor.

According to Lokayukta Superintendent of Police B.N. Neelgar, his team from Dharwad caught C.R. Ballari, Executive Engineer, Bridges and Inland Water Transportation, PWD, Belgaum division accepting a bribe of Rs. 3 lakh.

A trap was laid following a complaint by Class One contractor Symangouda Laxmangouda Kulkarni of T.V. Centre, Belgaum. Mr. Kulkarni had alleged that despite several requests, the official refused to release a pending bill unless the bribe was paid. However, Mr. Ballari demanded 2.5 per cent of the bill but later agreed to release it if Rs. 3 lakh was paid, the contractor alleged.
