Dr. Puttaraj Kavi Gawai Seva Sangha here will confer the Dr. Puttaraj Gawai award on Parameshwar Hegde, popular Hindustani vocalist, at a function to be held on March 3, which also marks the birth anniversary of Puttaraj Gawai.

The function will be held at the Raghava Kalamandir here at 6 p.m. The award comprises Rs. 11,000 in cash and a citation. Several heads of maths, including Siddalinga Rajadeshikendra Shivacharya of Ujjini peeth, will be present. Bandral Mrutyunjaya Swamy, president of the sangha, told mediapersons here on Friday that this was the first time that a State-level award in the name of Puttaraj Gawai was being conferred and it would be an annual feature from now on.

He said that the sangha had planned to extend its activities to rural areas by setting up its units there to identify the needy, especially the blind, and get them admitted at the Veereshwara Punyashram in Gadag or the Siddaganga Math in Tumkur.

He said that the sangha had urged the city corporation to name Parvatinagar Park after Puttaraj Gawai and it planned to install a bust of the musician there. Ravichandran Shabari, H. Yuvaraj, Basavarajaswamy and other office-bearers of the sangha, were present.
