Protests, disturbances and chaotic scenes marked the inauguration of the 10th District Kannada Sahitya Sammelan here on Wednesday.

The programme witnessed a protest soon after the arrival of former Minister and Hiriyur MLA D. Sudhakar. As if waiting for his arrival, some persons reportedly belonging to the BJP, climbed up the podium to protest his arrival.

Caught off-guard by this sudden action, the police rushed to the stage to clear the mob. Taking charge of the situation, the police immediately whisked away the protesters.

Meanwhile, there was a scuffle between the protesters and the supporters of Mr. Sudhakar.

Political rivalry is believed to be the reason behind the act.

After the inauguration, the programme again witnessed an uproar during the inaugural address of writer K.S. Bhagawan.

Mr. Bhagwan accused Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa of heeding the instructions of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangha (RSS) to run the Government instead of taking the opinion of the public and the legislators.

He alleged that the RSS was dictating terms to the Chief Minister in running the Government.

He also accused the RSS of “being anti-democratic and anti-constitution”.

“If the RSS has real respect for the Constitution, then it should know that the Constitution believes in equality of every person, irrespective of their religion. We will certainly welcome the RSS if it cares for the development of every person belonging to any religion of the country,” he said.

He urged Mr. Yeddyurappa to follow the principles of Basaveshwara who preached equality.
