BELLARY: Several Left activists under the banner of Joint Committee of Trade Unions (JCTU) were arrested here on Friday when they tried to stage a protest against the failure of the Union and State governments to control prices.

The protesters, who were on their way to the Deputy Commissioner's office, were stopped near Gadagi Chennappa Circle and taken into custody.

The Communist Party of India and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) have criticised the fuel price hike, saying it would further fuel inflation.

The activists also demanded strengthening of the public distribution system and implementation of labour welfare schemes.

They asked the Government not to go in for disinvestment in public sector undertakings.

Siddanagouda Patil, CPI State general secretary, A.R.M. Ismail, U. Basavaraj, Adimurthy and R.S.Basavaraj led the protesters.
