A large number of people under the banner of Karnataka Nava Nirmana Sene and Akhila Karnataka Darshan Toogudeepa Abhimanigala Balaga on Friday blocked National Highway 4 for more than an hour on the outskirts of the city demanding removal of all tollgates.

The agitators raised slogans against the Union government and National Highway Authority of India.

In a memorandum addressed to the Union government and submitted to the Deputy Commissioner here, the agitators questioned the propriety of collecting toll on the highway after collecting a huge amount as road tax from vehicle owners at the time of buying.

They urged the Union government to remove the tollgates, particularly the ones set up recently near Davangere on the Pune-Bangalore road.
