The violent protest that took place at Bangalore University (BU) on Friday was meant to be peaceful, said students of the Department of Electronic Media, who had staged the protest.

“We don't know if there were political elements among us, but we had decided that it should be done in a peaceful manner,” said third semester student Gajendra, reacting to reports that a majority of them did not belong to the university.

On Friday, a large number of “students” had staged an aggressive demonstration in front of the Vice-Chancellor's office on the Central College campus, following reports of their department being taken over by the Communication Department of the university. The co-ordinator of the Electronic Media department, N.S. Ashok Kumar, had left after receiving the offer to be the Registrar (Evaluation) of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS).

Mr. Gajendra said that the students' demand was for a skilled and effective lecturer, not for the recall of Mr. Kumar.
