Residents allege threats by local leaders

SHIMOGA: Residents of Bullapur staged a dharna in front of the zilla panchayat office here on Friday in protest against the delay in allotment of house sites to 51 persons, 15 years after the gram thana issued title deeds to them.

The protesters were led by the president of the zilla panchayat H.C. Basavarajappa.

The former members of the gram panchayat Murugesh Naik and Chandra Naik, who claimed that they were leaders of the Scheduled Castes, reportedly threatened and exerted pressure on the beneficiaries not to construct their houses, the protesters alleged. They charged that these leaders were involved in the “misuse” of funds released by the Government for development work.

In a memorandum presented to the Chief Executive Officer of the zilla panchayat, A.B. Hemachandra, the protesters urged him to take suitable action against them.

Mr. Hemachandra assured the residents that the sites would be allotted to the eligible beneficiaries after the counting of votes for the gram panchayat elections was over.

The protesters also asked the authorities concerned to initiate criminal cases against those who sold spurious seeds.
