Authorities urged to shift the market to another place
HDMC authorities to take decision in five days
Traders accused of doing business on the main road
HUBLI: Protesting against the apathy of the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) officials in preventing sale of fish in the open, residents of Matti Oni in Ganeshpet and the surrounding areas staged a rasta roko on the Ganeshpat Main Road here on Thursday.
The protesters were led by the seer of the Jadi Mutt and the newly-elected HDMC council member Sudhir Saraf.
The protesters said though the fish market was located 100 metres away from the main road, the retail merchants were carrying out their business on the main road, causing inconvenience to the residents.
The residents were forced to put up with the unbearable stench, they said and urged the civic authorities to either shift the fish market or take measures to keep the surroundings clean.
They then staged a rasta roko before submitting a memorandum to the HDMC Commissioner.
About eight wholesale merchants and 70 retail merchants are doing business at the fish market.
Mr. Saraf said that with the increase in demand for fish, the market had become congested and the merchants were demanding a more spacious location for carrying out their business.
He said the HDMC officials had assured that they would convene a meeting of all the stakeholders in another four to five days to make a decision on the issue.
