Members of the Hubli-Dharwad Mahanagara Zilla Unit of Youth Janata Dal (Secular) staged a demonstration here on Tuesday against the sale of drugs past their expiry date at the ESI Hospital. The members conducted a ‘surprise check’ on the hospital following complaints about lack of cleanliness and irregularities in the functioning of the hospital. When the protesters entered the medical store, they allegedly found expired drugs. The protesters said they were not given satisfactory answers by the hospital staff.

President of the youth wing Vijay Alagundagi and other office-bearers alleged that the expired drugs were sold to ignorant patients. When the members tried to contact the director of the hospital, he refused to talk. Irked by this, the protesters locked the staff in a room for some time demanding that the director come to the spot.

While the officer did not turn up, the police convinced the protesters to withdraw their protest. The staff assured that steps would be taken to improve the situation.
