HASSAN: The Malnad Janapara Horata Samiti (MJHS) and the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV) staged a dharna outside the Deputy Commissioner's office here on Wednesday against the permission given to mini-hydro power generation projects in Gundia forest of the Western Ghats in Sakleshpur taluk.

MJHS president H.A. Kishore Kumar and KRV president C.D. Manukumar noted that several rivers originated in the Western Ghats.

There were several important species of trees, medicinal plants and wildlife in the region. The mini-hydro power generation projects would affect the environment, they said.

The projects would also result in less rain and increase in global warming, they cautioned.

Besides, the protesters did not want the Nethravathi diversion project to be taken up.

A memorandum with their demands was presented to the Deputy Commissioner.
