TUMKUR: Senior Citizen's Forum for Environment has urged the Government to protect trees in Tumkur city from those who pluck leaves to feed the sheep and goats.

Forum president Pauli Sankarananda told presspersons here on Monday that senior citizens of Tumkur city took keen interest in maintaining greenery.

`Talk of the town'

A grove of 600 trees raised on the Government Science and Arts College campus was the "talk of the town".

It was aptly named "Sandhyavanam" and senior citizens met under the trees in the morning and in the evening.

Mr. Sankarananda said for the past one month shepherds had been plucking leaves from almost every tree in the city and feeding the goats.

The forum president accused the forest officials of doing nothing to prevent this. "On the one hand, the officials propagate growing of trees and on the other they failed to protect them," he said.

Union

He said voluntary organisations formed a union recently. The union had announced that one lakh saplings would be planted.
