MYSORE: NR Foundation, the philanthropic arm of city-based N. Ranga Rao and Sons, has launched "Project Prerepana" to promote sustainable development of slums in Mysore. It will focus on women and child welfare with thrust on health and education.

    R. Guru, chairman of N.R. Group, said in a release that education had always been close to our hearts and we had encouraged projects towards this cause.

"Project Prerepana" would look into health and education, the two crucial components of development as enunciated by United Nations Development Programme.

It would be launched in six slums in Mysore including those behind P.K. Sanitorium in Kumbarkoppal; Ambedkar Colony in Metagalli; Manjunathapura; Medar Block; Hebbal Colony and in Bamboo Bazaar.

The project is being executed by Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement.

Its president Balasubramaniam said that the slums selected had close to 600 children in the age group of 3-16.

The main objective of the project was to promote schooling in that age group with focus on health and hygiene, he said

The project would generate awareness on issues crucial for development, establish learning centres, provide career guidance and counselling, and strengthen community-based institutions. The awareness programmes would target self-help groups, youth, children and parents and the learning centres would focus on school dropouts and child labourers.

"It will adopt a joyful and learner-centric approach," the release said.

The health component of the project will be executed by Sitaranga Nursing Home.

It will conduct regular health check-up camps for the target group.
