Different activities taken up under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) in Uttara Kannada district during 2009-10 and also in 2010-11 are satisfactory, Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri, Primary and Secondary Education Minister, has said.

He was talking to presspersons in Karwar after a review meeting of the abhiyan in the academic districts of Karwar and Sirsi, on Wednesday.

Mr. Kageri said that during the financial year 2009-10, Rs. 40 crore had re-lapsed and of this amount, about Rs. 36 crore was spent. Under the abhiyan grant, 100 per cent target was achieved under different schemes.

This included salary of teachers, furniture of cluster resources, centres, and grants of different schools, management grants, education coordination, and civil works, he said. He said that four new schools were sanctioned and nine schools were upgraded in the district.

The Minister discussed with the officials the implementation of schemes meant for enhancement of quality of education for schoolchildren. He also issued directions to headmasters of schools and officials concerned in this connection.

He asked assistant directors of education to visit rural schools in hilly areas and assess the situation. Teachers should concentrate on clean writing and clear reading, Mr. Kageri said.
