SHIMOGA: Elections to the posts of president of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat, Bangalore, and those of its district units will be held on August 24.

Shimoga tahsildar Amaresh, who is also the returning officer for the election to the post of president of the district unit, told presspersons here on Friday that draft electoral rolls had been notified in the offices of tahsildars in the district.

June 20 was the last date to receive any complaints regarding the electoral rolls, he said and added that the final electoral rolls would be announced on July 10.

Nominations will be received between June 14 and 21. Scrutiny of nomination papers will be held on June 23 and June 26 will be the last date for withdrawal of nomination papers. He said that the final list of candidates would be announced on June 26.

Mr. Amaresh said that elections to these posts, if necessary, would be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on August 24 and counting of votes would be taken up immediately after polling.

He said that 62,000 members were eligible to cast their votes in the elections. Those aspiring to contest for the president’s post of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat should be its members for the last 10 years and should keep a deposit of Rs. 1,000 each. Those aspiring to contest for the president’s post of the district unit of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat should be its members for the last five years and should keep a deposit of Rs. 500 each, he said.

Mr. Amaresh said that nomination papers and electoral rolls would be made available at the offices of tahsildars and Deputy Directors of the Kannada and Culture Department.

He said that the “model code of conduct” had come into force from Friday. District Information Officer Devarajaiah was present.
