Yeddyurappa will hoist literacy flag
Adult Learners’ Week from September 9
SHIMOGA: The Directorate of Mass Education, Bangalore; the district administration; District Literacy Committee; and Jan Shikshana Samsthe are gearing up to organise International Literacy Day celebrations and Adult Learners’ Week on the premises of the samsthe here on September 8.
Addressing presspersons here on Saturday, Chief Executive Officer of the zilla panchayat and Chairman of the District Literacy Committee A.B. Hemachandra said that Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa would hoist the literacy flag and launch the programme.
He said that Adult Learners’ Week would be organised as part of the Literacy Day campaign from September 9 to 14 as per the directions from the Union Government. Mr. Hemachandra said that the literacy flag would be hoisted at the district, taluk, and village levels as part of the programme. Handbills on the significance of Adult Learners’ Week and women’s literacy would be released on the occasion.
He said that a cultural festival on folk art by volunteers, neo-literates and learners; a neo-literates’ meet on women literacy and various competitions would be held. Successful neo-literates and volunteers would be honoured. A rally and human chain would be held throughout the district, he added.
He said the MLAs of Sagar, Hosnagar, Bhadravati, Shikaripur, Sorab, Shimoga, Shimoga Rural and Tirthahalli would launch the literacy programme in their respective constituencies.
Director of the samsthe S.Y. Arunadevi said 35,000 people, especially neo-literates, had been trained in various professional skills throughout the district.
She said that Minister for Energy K.S. Eshwarappa, Minister for Food and Civil Supplies Hartalu Halappa, Vice-Chairman of the State Planning Commission D.H. Shankaramurthy, Shimoga MP B.Y. Raghavendra, Vice-Chairman of Non-Resident Indians’ Forum Ganesh Karnik, president of Mysore Paper Mills Araga Jnanendra and Deputy Commissioner Pankaj Kumar Pandey would take part in the inaugural function.
Mr. Hemachandra said that the valedictory function would be organised at the Police Parade Ground on September 14.
