Prema Lokeshappa of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been elected as the president of Davangere Zilla Panchayat here on Wednesday defeating Congress candidate Kavitha Rangaswamy by a margin of two votes.

While Ms. Prema secured 18 votes, Ms. Kavitha got 16 votes.

Earlier, Ms. Prema and Ambika Rajappa of the BJP had submitted nomination for the post.

However, Ms. Ambika withdrew from the contest at the behest of the BJP leaders.

Members were asked to raise their hands to show support to the candidate during the elections. Gowrav Gupta, Regional Commissioner, conducted the elections.

Chief Executive Officer of Davangere Zilla Panchayat A.B. Hemachandra was present.

She defeated the Congress candidate by a margin of
