he legendary actor Pran, who passed away on Friday, has left an indelible impression on the Kannada film industry and audience through his performance in K.V. Jayaram’s Hosa Raaga .
In the film starring Sudharani, Shashikumar, Chandrika, Vikram and Keerthi, Pran essayed the role of a sportsman, who grooms his daughter (Sudharani) as an athlete.
For an actor of his calibre, Pran mesmerised the crew with his simplicity. Shyamsundar Kulkarni, script and dialogue-writer, recalled the days spent with Pran.
“The first thing that came to my mind on learning about the thespian’s demise was his humility and the way he cooperated with the production. He was truly what legends are made of — natural talent and thorough professionalism combined with versatility,” Mr. Kulkarni said.
When producers were looking for an actor who would do justice to the role, the film’s distributor, Paul Chandani, initially had Rajnikanth and Amitabh Bachchan in mind. Big B expressed his inability to take the offer because of a clash of dates, and asked him to contact Pran instead. “Pran not only agreed to act but also arranged his own costume and wig, which in those days was a huge burden on the producers,” Mr. Kulkarni said. “He expected no advance and asked us to pay his remuneration after the shooting was complete. Though shooting went beyond the dates Pran had given, he did not grumble but flew between Mumbai and Bangalore at his own expense,” he recollected.
Shyamsundar remembered how Pran relished curd rice prepared by his wife. “My daughter used to bring curd rice and serve him. Before leaving Bangalore he came to my house and thanked my wife,” he says.
