Belgaum: A portion of a government school building on Mali Galli here, including the staircase leading to the first floor, collapsed on Sunday. However, there was none at the spot at the time of the incident.

The Government Kannada-Marathi-Urdu-medium primary school No 11 was constructed in 1997. It houses a ground floor and a first floor with five classrooms, and an office of the headmistress.

A wall of the building had developed cracks due to poor maintenance.

This had been brought to the notice of the authorities concerned last week.

However, there was no immediate response in taking up the necessary repair works.

The Block Education Officer, who visited the school, promised to take up the matter with the taluk panchayat and start repair works in the next two days.

Headmistress P.V. Kulkarni said that she had become apprehensive about the strength of the structure after the incident.

“Thank God, there was no one when the staircase collapsed,” she added.

Yet, classes are being conducted on the ground floor as there was no way to reach the first floor, Ms. Kulkarni added.
